I am a professor and the Director of Graduate Admissions and Placement in the Government Department at the University of Texas at Austin. My research and teaching focus on the intersection of language and politics – whether the politics of language (e.g., the representation and attitudes of linguistic minorities) or the language of politics (e.g., how leaders talk and how people think). I have done fieldwork in Southeast Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and the United States – often through the empirical lens of the Chinese diaspora, Chinese language, or Greater China. For more information on my published works, see the \books\ and \research\ tabs. I have also posted course information and some past syllabuses under the \teaching\ tab. I am also the codirector of the Politics of Race and Ethnicity Lab.
